AFTER/BEFORE
Project and site supervision

The project aimed to recover three of the ancient wash-houses in Albavilla, restoring them to the public use and enjoyment. The wash-houses are only apparently “minor” buildings, as they constitute a unique heritage in terms of number and variety, strongly characterizing the historic city centre and the entire territory. In fact, they represent precious testimonies of daily life, telling us about the wise management of water resources over the centuries, as well as the evolution of the “wash-house type”, in order to improve the hygiene and comfort conditions. At the same time, the architectural features reflect the taste and demands of the different periods, whether they are new constructions or the adaptation of existing structures. The interventions aimed to repair the damages resulting from the cessation of use of the wash-houses and the consequent weakening of maintenance works. The project has a conservative approach, preserving the fragile identity of the buildings embedded in the existing structures and elements, from the oldest ones to the technical solutions adopted in the 1930s and 1940s, such as in the prefabricated reinforced concrete beams and glass bricks. Particular attention was paid to the plaster and stone basins, as well as to the new additions, designed to improve environmental conditions and make the adaptive reuse of these wash-houses possible.
